Ryan and I got married in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico this past March 4th and needless to say it did not go as planned. Our plan was to have our ceremony and reception on the beach. Well Mother Nature had other plans. About an hour before the wedding a big storm blew in. Most rain storms in Mexico usually last about 30 minutes and then it clears up, this was not one of those storms. After trying to wait it out for awhile we finally had to make the decision to move the wedding and reception inside. Although our vision was not really what we got we still had a wonderful time because the important thing was that we had our closest family and friends there to support us in the beginning of our life together. Thank you to you all for being patient and celebrating with us.

We've undergone a lot of Big changes in the last couple of months. The biggest change is that Mike and I relocated to Massachusetts this past Spring. As a result of the new move, I have decided to turn The Bliss List over to some new very capable, creative, and enthusiastic hands.

It is my honor to introduce the new owners of The Bliss List, Janda Nielsen & McKenzie Muehlfelder. From this moment on, these two sisters will be the new voice of The Bliss List, sharing their designs, inspiration, recommendations and fresh ideas. I am completely confident that they will carry The Bliss List brand to new and exciting places.

I snagged this image from the Courtney Callahan Paper Blog (stationery designer!) - I LOVE this idea for a printed, elegant seating chart. There are so many interesting ways to display your escort cards and seating assignments... see below what I design for our wedding.

It is kinda funny - I designed this for our guests to take their card off of the board, but everyone just looked at their assignment and left the card! Either way, it worked great.

Welcome Baskets | DIY Bags for Wedding Guests

For my wedding, my Mom and I put these gift bags together for our guests when they arrived. I love how they turned out!

Each bag contained 2 mini Italian Sparkling Wines, a bag of homemade cookies, a bag of snack mix, an agenda for the weekend and a list of the names of everyone's cottages.

I printed the "Welcome" folded bag topper on half of the card stock sheet. On the other half, I printed the agenda with the cottage assignments on the other side.

A couple of weeks ago, I helped Lauren & Brent with their wedding. We added several fun 'crafty' elements to the event... it was a lot of fun!

Above : I created a flower graphic to add to the stationery that mimicked one of Lauren's favorite fabric patterns. We repeated it on the programs and welcome notes.

These were the arrangements for the rehearsal dinner - fun, garden-y, and whimsical.

Each of her Mom's friends made a brightly colored cake to contribute... it was a big hit - 9 different flavors!

I made this mini wedding cake as the centerpiece of their cakes and for them to cut.

These hotel bags contained some of the bride and groom's favorite goodies.

DIY | Chalkboard Menu

By using a framed painting that somehow ended up at my house I created this DIY Chalkboard Menu for FREE!

1 cup of dark grey paint

1 tablespoon of sanded grout

1 old frame with fitting board (wood, posterboard, hardboard)

Mix together the paint and grout. Paint on the board and let it dry.

I also gave the frame a white coat of paint for a dramatic contrast.

DIY | How to make a floral centerpiece

For this weekend's wedding rehearsal dinner, I put together 10 centerpieces. The bride gave me comeplete control - which I love, of course.

I selected a variety of greens, white hydrangeas, white peonies, white feathery spikey flowers, tuberose, pink peonies, pink/coral garden roses and yellow billy balls.

In floral foam I place sprigs of greens to create the shape.

Next, I insert the largest flowers to give volume.

Then, begin placing flowers evenly based on shape and color throught the arrangement.

Continue adding flowers until a full bouquet is created. Be sure to add a bit of whimsy - some drooping flowers dipping below the container, and above..

For our wedding, they will be doing "tablescapes" similar to these photos... various size vases with flowers, and various candles. So often, I encounter brides who are looking for a unique way to incorporate their ‘colors’ into the décor of their wedding. Not long ago I stumbled across this beautiful photo of a table setting in the spring issue of Martha Stewart Weddings.

It is so incredibly stunning, and beautiful—yet simple. With the selection of ribbon available on the world wide web the opportunity for a bride to create a one of a kind look is definitely within reach.

Today, I'm supposed to pick out the ribbon I want to use for the bouquets - scary! I LOVE ribbon, there are so many choices - endless selections of beautiful ribbons. AND, I'm a little picky about ribbon... okay, very picky. Every time I order a spool online it seems to be just a hint the wrong shade. Besides colors, there are so many material options - taffeta, dupioni, double faced satin, grosgrain. Is it strange that I feel like this decision is as important as my dress? Ribbon can completely set the tone for your flowers... and your wedding. Is it fancy (satin), luxurious (dupioni) or charming (grosgrain)?

So... here we go. I've narrowed down to this selection. Let the elimination begin!

Rehearsal Dinner | Family Style Tuscan Dinner at Home

I LOVE rehearsal dinners. A small intimate group of your closest friends and family sharing a meal with all of the pending excitement of the big day... so much fun. This rehearsal dinner, held at the home of the groom's father was perfect - a Tuscan family style dinner by the pool at sunset.

**Thanks to Tim Seley the Videographer (timseleystudios.com) who was willing to snap these still images for me - I'll post his video as soon as it is ready!

We set two long table with an adjoining head table.

The cafe lights strung throughout the patio provided the perfect ambiance.

Bride & Groom chalkboard seating cards.

We used ivory linens with a brown burlap runner, natural chairs and vintage ball jars to create a casual, relaxed table. I filled bronze buckets with wildflowers to enhance the 'tuscany' style party.

With bottles of wine on the table, and large platters passed around - everyone was able to help themselves.

DIY | Welcome Baskets for Your Guests

When you have out of town guests traveling in for your wedding, a welcome basket is a great way to show your gratitude. Above, I've assembled a large basket for a group that is staying together. We included the following in our basket :

-Bottle Water

-KC Boulevard Wheat Beer

-Starbucks Vio

-M&M's

-Granola with Fruit & Nuts

-Gourmet Nuts & Pretzel Snack

-Fresh Fruit

I wrapped the entire basket in celophane with a large satin ribbon and included a note with the transportation schedule from the hotel to the wedding events.

DIY | Custom Painted Aisle Runner | Pew Cones

Customized aisle runners can cost hundreds of dollars. I created this runner for last weekend's wedding for just under $100! I used blackout drapery lining as the runner in an ivory/white that I ordered from Joanns.com with a 40% off coupon - a great deal on 25 yards of fabric. It came in the mail perfectly rolled up on a ream.

I started by enlarging the monogram on my computer then printing it. I cut it out with scissors and centered it on the runner about 10 feet from the end of the runner (so monogram was 10 feet from the entrance of the aisle).

I traced the monogram with a pencil on the runner.

Next, I mixed paint colors in a grey and a lapis blue/purple color. I painted it directly onto the runner using painters tape to help with straight lines.

After I had finished and it had dried, I covered the monogram with parchment paper and taped it into place so when I rolled it the paint did not smudge.

Here is the runner in the church. The 54" fabric was a perfect fit to the 6' aisle. We roped off the aisle with a ribbon to keep guests from walking on it - they were seated from the outside of the pews and the ribbon was removed just before the processional.

I secured the edges with pearl pins every 5 feet to keep it from shifting.

We also made these cone pews that we placed every 5 pews. We started with styrofoam cones and hollowed out a cup in the top to place the oasis floral foam for the flowers. Next we pinned fabric around the con and secured it in the back to hide the seams.

Attach them to the pews by wrapping the cones with ribbon, single knotting it and then tying them from inside the pew.

DIY | Pink Peony Bouquet

For last weekend's wedding, I created these peony and hyacinth bouquets for the bridesmaids to carry. Here's how I did it...

Start by removing all of the leaves from the stems.

Bunch the flowers together adjusting them into a round mound. Use floral tape to secure the stems.

Cut the stems just below where your hand ends and wrap in ribbon.

How to Create a Wedding Seating Chart | Place Cards & Escort Cards

At traditional receptions with a sit-down dinner, I always suggest providing assigned seating. If you've never taken on this task, it can be a little confusing... Here is step-by-step guide.

Step 1 : Divide your guests into table groupings and decide how many tables you'll need.

Step 2 : Create a room layout drawing or diagram. Most venues have a scaled version for you to use.

Step 3 : Layout your tables as you'd like them in the room. Be sure to allow plenty of room between tables - I recommend at least 5 feet.

Step 4 : Number the tables on the room diagram. Then, assign table numbers to your guest table groupings. This is helpful so the coordinator knows where exactly you want table 8, for example, and what other numbers you want near it. Many brides make the mistake of putting the tables in numerical order, but not considering where that number will be in the room.

Step 5 : Create your escort cards with table numbers for individuals (Miss Jennifer Steffens) or by couple (Mr. & Mrs. James Steffens) - it is up to you. After the escort cards are written, put them in alphabetical order for displaying - this helps guests to easily find their names. If you want them displayed evenly spaced on a table, you might even divide them into even rows. These sort of tasks can take longer than you think and it is best not to leave them to the last minute... like 10 minutes before guests arrive!

**You can stop here if you'd like and only provide table assignments for your guests, or you can go a step further and give them a seat assignment at the table, as well. If you do choose to give a seat assignment, I recommend the following process...

Step 6 : Create individual place cards for each guest and sort them into table groupings - Ex. group all of the cards for guests at Table 10 together. Put them in order of how you would like them to sit around the table. Next, create a written list of the guests in order for the table (in case your cards get dropped and out of order - it happens! Then everyone gets mixed up and ends up sitting by someone else's date!). Put the cards and the list into a plastic bag and put the table number on the outside of the bag.

TIPS :

*Create an "Emergency" table. This open table (or reserve a table with only 3-5 guests assigned to it) will be used for any unexpected guests or mix ups. It can save a lot of trouble if the staff needs to squeeze in extra place settings at the last minute.

*Don't divide your dining room into bride and groom sections. Try to mix up your guests so they can meet each other. I like to seat half of a table with the grooms side and half of the table with the brides side. If this is too adventurous for you, just do every other table.

This may seem like quite the process, but it is well worth it to make your guests feel welcome!

Rentals are a great way to easily transform your reception from a party to an event... Creating cohesive design, coordinating colors and big statements. From linens and drapes, to chairs and candelabras... here are some items that are sure to give you a big bang for your buck!

Above : I love this look - considering it for my own wedding! I think the scalloped (rented) charger/plates are so sweet, and the white lattice work compotes are vintage and modern looking at the same time. Many of your florists can rent items like these.

Can you imagine how this room would look with standard linens and chairs?! Not very impressive, I'm sure. Remember, no matter how many hundreds of floral arrangements you pack into a reception space, they will never make the impact you envision without complimenting linens and chairs.

Above & Below : This lounge area created by STUDIO Dan Meiners is one of my favorites. I still dream about that giant silk curtain that made Union Station so intimate. He alternated sheer and opaque panels to create a modern yet classic look. So, while guests were at the cocktail hour, they could just get glittering glimpses of the dining room through the sheer curtains... He's full of amazing ideas.

This week I participated in the Delta Gamma Alumnae's Tables That Bloom event. Here are some of the tables from area designers!

This table was AMAZING. Natasha's Mulberry & Mott created an Allis and Wonderland themed table - so elaborate!

Becco Flowers created this table - so bright and fun. Isn't that linen great? It has stripes of 'petals'.

This is The Bliss List table - Bliss Blue taffeta linen, Blooming Branches from my backyard in blue Ball jars, ticking stripe napkins and vintage gold and china place settings.

This table was designed by Victorian Gardens.

Of course, I love anything spray painted metallic!

The out-of-town guests stayed at The Raphael on The Plaza in Kansas City. All of the rooms have been recently renovated and are adorable.

The Bridal Party also got ready at The Raphael with some help from the Bijin Salon.

What a fantastic moment - Tyler, you are too good.

Our bridesmaids dresses were Vera Wang in Midnight Blue - the perfect color for November.

I love the guys in classic black bow ties!

STUDIO Dan Meiners did all of the reception design - including this "King" Head Table that was draped in an Ivory Bengaline with gold chiavari chairs.

The other tables at the reception sported a Fawn colored floor length bengaline with ivory napkins and gold chargers.

Another image of the room - I just can't help myself!

The flowers were stunning and bountiful! Hydrangeas, garden roses, tulips, soft lambs ear, ranunculus and freesia.

STUDIO Dan Meiners draped the massive rooms at The Nelson with giant silk lamour drapes. It make the space incredibly elegant and intimate.

The cocktail area was also studded with hundreds of votives and plenty of large arrangements.

The cake was unbelievable. Kay Benjamin of Take The Cake created this four tiered cake adorned with pale rose gold orchids.

This is one of my favorite moments that Tyler captured.

Katie wore a Monique Lhullier gown and put on this fabulous lace bolero for the reception.

The Galaxy (amazing band from St. Louis) was so much fun as always!

For the exit, Dan Meiners' crew put all of these candles down the stairs - it was so magical... and of course, Tyler Wirken was there to capture the perfect moment of the new husband and wife!

This morning I'm working on a proposal for a Client that plans to host a luncheon in the Shelter at Loose Park. I developed the following sketch to help express my vision for the decor...

Whenever I'm planning an event, whether it be a birthday party, cocktail event or wedding, I find it so helpful to create a sketch like this. Not only does it help my Client understand my vision, it helps to ensure that the other vendors I'm working with are all on the same page and headed towards the same goal!

As you've read in previous blog entries, for the last year STUIDO Dan Meiners has been renovating a new space near Union Station. I can't wait to see the finished product - I'm sure it will be fabulous! Along with space for the STUDIO to create their floral designs, the space will include an Event Space for receptions, rehearsal dinners, corporate functions and special occasions!

As you can see, Dan is using many natural materials for the space... and mostly reused materials salvaged from old buildings - oh so green!

The shop is a tiny nook filled to the brim with delicate linen cocktail napkins, framed embroidery, unique place mats, luxurious bed linens, and special table linens.

Registry | Gifts | Wedding Registry Guide

Most new brides are confused about registering for wedding gifts.

What makes it more confusing is that retailers are 'going after' brides like never before... their rules and tips are not always the proper thing to do - remember, their motive is to sell you as many things as they can!

I think the most important thing to remember when registering is to be a gracious, considerate person... actually, that rule should apply to all aspects of wedding planning! That being said, here are a few tips that will help you :

1) Select 2-3 retailers to give your guests options for convenience. Select some national retailers, and some specialty local boutiques.

2) Select a variety of price points. Do not make all of your guests feel like they need to spend a month's rent! Have plenty of gifts that are around $50 and around $100. A $50 gift is great for showers, and $100 perfect for the wedding.

3) Do not put inappropriate items (such as a sofa or sea salt...) on the registry. Just because you want it does not mean it needs to go on the list! In general, wedding gifts should be of heirloom quality (china, silver, crystal), a keepsake, or great for making the couple's home (platters for entertaining, linens, small appliances...).

4) Keep it simple. Try to limit your registry to only include items that you will find useful. Do not just select something because it is 'cute' or 'fun'. You should have a plan!
