Flower of the Season : Dahlia | by Studio Dan Meiners

Guest Blogger Dan Meiners from STUDIO Dan Meiners

Shaggy mops. Perfect little spheres. Peony look-alikes. Layered masterpieces the size of dinner plates. From pure white to nearly black and almost every shade in between…what flower can boast such feats of versatility?  Why only the dahlia, of course.

Native to Mexico, where it grows in sandy meadows at an elevation 5,000 feet above the sea, the dahlia was originally cultivated by the ancient Aztecs, who used its tuberous roots as a source of food, converted its long, woody stems into pipes, and adorned their ceremonial costumes with the blooms. In the late 1700’s, Spanish explorers introduced dahlias to Europe, where they were originally grown as a food source. Though their striking good looks quickly overtook their flavor as a reason for propagation, dahlias are still valued today by chefs, who take advantage of the mild-tasting edible petals to add bold color to a myriad of dishes.

In the Victorian language of flowers, dahlias mean elegance and dignity, and in Chinese floral symbolism they represent good taste. In addition to being a paragon of sophistication and glamour, the dahlia also has a remarkable history of saving lives: it is one of only two sources of a natural sugar called Laevulose, which was used to treat diabetes in tens of thousands of people until insulin was discovered in 1922.

The dahlia’s diversity of form and function, incredible loveliness, and universal appeal led Mexico to declare it the national flower, and have made it the second-highest grossing crop in floriculture after tulips. We love dahlias for their sturdiness, longevity, and big, bold presence in arrangements, and look forward to their arrival in the flower houses every summer.

Wedding Logos | Soiree Event Design

Post from guest bloggers, Soiree Event Design...  Visit Soiree's new blog!

A recent trend in weddings has been the use of a monogram. Or you may have heard it called a logo. The word logo has been used more than not as this stamp is more of a branding on your big day than a formal monogram. Brides are using this logo from save the dates and all the way through to lighted images projected onto their dance floors. I've even seen it jeweled onto the bottom of the bride's shoes so when she kneels at the altar all her guests get a little surprise! You may not need to go that far, but logos are a nice way to keep cohesiveness from the introduction of your wedding style all the way through to the big day and are perfect for all DIY projects.

Some traditional ways to incorporate your logo:
- Save the Dates
- Invitations
- Wedding Programs
- Menu Cards
- Favor Packaging
- On floral vases
Some non-traditional ideas:
- Shower Thank You cards
- Wax stamp/closure on the outside of your invitations
- Custom postage stamps
- Pew ends
- Embroidered on the inside of the Bride's dress or Groom's tie
- Paper chargers
- Icing design on cookies to accompany your cake
- Inside floral wreaths

To get your personalized logo, ask your invitation creator to design a custom monogram for you. Or, there are tons of online resources. Try online papier Betsy White (they did the logo above):
Her black and white logos are $50 and her one-color logos are $75. You get a .pdf of the logo and can use it as many times as you'd like. Or try I Do Originals:
For only $10 you can select any 3 logos or for $15 you can get 5! Pre-ready monograms are customized with your info and wedding colors. Or they also have custom designs options as well. If you have any online resources that are your favorite, please let us know!

Olive Events Tasting

Last Wednesday evening I was invited to attend a tasting at Olive Events & Catering.  Olive holds this event twice a year to give a sampling of their favorites to prospective clients... and wedding bloggers (like me!).  I know, my job can be so difficult sometimes!

Above : Purple Potato topped with Sour Cream and Caviar |  Tomato Caprese Kabob | Smoked Salmon Toast with Wasabi Drizzle  |  Watermelon Sake Sipper  |  Pineapple Mojito  |  Sangria topped with a Cherry

This is the second event I've attended in the same week that featured Sangria - at trend of which I won't soon tire!

The other featured cocktail was a Pineapple Mojito, a delightful concoction of rum infused with fresh pineapple then mixed with mint, Perrier and sugar.  Refreshing.

I love a good, seasonal recipe.  This crab cake was updated for summer with the addition of coconut.  The result was a delicious, classic crab cake with the slightest hint of sweet coconut.  Genius.

And for dessert... this creamy, smooth, thick, decadent chocolate mouse with Grand Marnier whipped cream.  Yes, please.

These bite-sized cupcakes were the 'take-home-treats' presented on a large tray as we left.

Thanks Olive Events & Catering for another great tasting!

The newest addition to The Bliss List’s Real KC Wedding Gallery is a sophisticated affair held at The Kansas City Country Club.  As you’ll see, classic elements like her hydrangeas and his white dinner jacket compliment the more whimsical touches like the fireworks, custom “S.S. Goodtimes” wine label and tree strung chandeliers.  You can see more photos in the KC Wedding Gallery.

Something You Design | Stationery | New Member

I'm please to announce our newest Bliss List Member : Something You Design.  The concept behind Ashley Jenks' (creator of Something You Design) company is bringing her Clients' personalities into their wedding stationery.  With her beautiful design skills and the Clients as inspiration, you can't go wrong!

See more of Ashley's work on her Bliss List Member page, or on her website, www.somethingyoudesign.com.  Enjoy!

Ashley Jenks, creator of Something You Design, interview with The Bliss List :

1.  What is your favorite type of wedding to be a part of?
Any wedding really, I absolutely love them!  It is so exciting to be a part of such happy events in the lives of others.

2.  What is your favorite 'of the moment' color palette or theme?  Why?
Currently, I am loving anything with a vibrant color, such as yellow, and slate grey.  I feel that the grey provides a sense of sophistication, but isn't quite as serious as black.  And a vibrant color provides an outlet for fun and personality.

3.  What is one word (or small phrase) that describes your brand and/or your work?
Personal.  Unique.  You.  This truly explains what I do; all of my invitations are custom.  I prefer to not offer any premade designs because I believe that every wedding and every couple is different, so they shouldn't have to pick invites out of a catalog.

4.  What is your favorite business moment?
It was amazing after sending out my first set of invitations, to receive compliments from people I didn't know.  Hearing praise from strangers gave me the desire to work even harder to create amazing invitations.

5.  What is the best advice you can give a bride-to-be?
Don't stress over the little things.  The littlest details can seem so important during the planning process, but at the end of the day, what matters it that you and your groom are happily married.  So gather your friends and family, and have a great time.

6.  What is your favorite source of inspiration?
First and foremost, the couple.  My designs are intended to capture their personalities, along with their wishes for their wedding.  But my inspiration also comes from my second design love, interiors.  I love looking at images in decor magazines, and trying to replicate the feeling on paper.

7.  What is your favorite spot in KC?
I don't really have a favorite spot that I keep going back to, but my husband and I had dinner at Seven downtown on Valentine's Day, and it was an awesome restaurant.  Swanky atmosphere and great food.

8.  What is your favorite indulgence or greatest weakness?
Chocolate ice cream with almost any topping.  I am an ice cream junkie!

How to Style Your Party : by Dan Meiners of STUDIO Dan Meiners

STUDIO STYLE: Creating a Fabulous Table
on a less-than-fabulous budget

After a long and hectic week, nothing is better than getting together with friends to unwind over dinner and a few cocktails. And though it is lovely to go out, some of the most entertaining evenings happen in our own back yards. So the question is, how do you create a really memorable outdoor party without breaking the bank in the process? Our best advice to keep it affordable while making it gorgeous is to use what you already have around the house in creative new ways and supplement with fresh flowers and greenery.

An easy way to begin is to first establish your décor theme and color scheme. Inspiration can come from the color of a prized perennial that just started blooming in the garden, the watermelon mint cocktail you are serving, or those bright new cushions you got this spring for your patio set. Think about the style of the food you are serving or the patterns on your table linens and china, and use these as the jumping-off point.

After you have chosen your scheme, look around your house for things in that color family or genre to begin building your table-scape. Repurpose a gorgeous scarf or a series of placemats as a table runner. Use a collection of pretty or funky glassware, ceramic cups, or silver candle holders as flower vases. Try to look at objects you use every day in a new light, and layer pieces of varied heights and textures to create interest on the table. Don't be afraid to experiment; just make sure to leave enough empty space on the table for the items to stand out.

Different shades of one or two colors work well to unify a variety of found objects from your home into a cohesive table. Finish it all off by filling the containers you have chosen with an abundance of fresh flowers that complement your color palette. Tuck leaves, flowers, and branches from your own garden among the showy blooms from the florist to create arrangements that are budget-friendly and tie in well with the surroundings. Above all, have fun with your decorating. Your guests will appreciate your personal touches and will never guess that you did it all on a budget.

Natasha's Mulberry & Mott featured on David Jimenez's table at Kansas City's Dining by Design

Sweet treats from Natasha's Mulberry & Mott were the centerpiece of David Jimenez's table for Kansas City's Dining by Design.  David is the VP Visual Merchandiser and Store Designer for Hallmark Cards, and contributor for Spaces, as well as known for the inspiration behind the look of Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware.

below : images courtesy of Mrs. Blandings Blog, a fabulous Kansas City interior design and lifestyle blog.
David's color choices are fabulous.  I love how he painted the chivari chairs blue.

Adorable french macaroon cake from Natasha.

Look at the amazing color of those macaroons!  These French Macaroons are such a great favor for weddings and showers... the texture of these slightly crunchy, yet chewing, yet creamy confections is... well, so delightful.  The perfect treat for your guests - not too overwhelming.  See Natasha's macaroons as wedding favors shown in this wedding.

Thanks to Mrs. Blandings Blog for the photos!

Albeit Jewelry : Great Bridesmaids Gift

They've worn the dress you picked out (maybe even paid for it), attended countless showers (and probably hosted some, too), and consulted with you on wedding 'disasters'... I think they deserve something lovely as a token of thanks and remembrance. This delicate, tini-tiny necklace from Albeit Jewelry is just the thing!
